Sharing My Journey: From College to a Career in Risk Management Insurance

Last week, I had the privilege of speaking to 70+ bright and ambitious college students from the McNeil Institute, part of Le Moyne College’s Risk Management & Insurance program. It was an incredible opportunity to reflect on my own path—from being a college student just like them to building a career in the insurance industry—and share some insights that might help them as they navigate their own journeys.
I started by taking them back to my college days. Like many students, I was eager to get a head start on my career, but I wasn’t entirely sure how to make it happen. That changed the summer going into my senior year when I decided to pursue my Property and Casualty (P&C) license. It wasn’t easy—balancing coursework, exam prep, and the usual chaos of college life—but it was a game changer. Earning that license before graduation gave me a tangible credential and a sense of direction.
From there, I shared what it was like working at a GEICO office during my senior year. It was my first real taste of the insurance world—hands-on, fast-paced, and full of lessons. I juggled client calls, policy questions, and walk-in customers while still making it to class (most of the time). One memory that still makes me laugh to this day was when I volunteered to wear the GEICO Gecko mascot uniform for a local event. Picture this: me, sweating in a giant green lizard suit, handing out flyers in the drive thru of a coffee shop, all while trying not to trip over the tail. It was ridiculous, humbling, and honestly kind of fun. Beyond the laughs, it taught me how to step out of my comfort zone and embrace every part of the job—even the quirky stuff. My GEICO experience didn’t just build my resume; it showed me how the concepts I was studying applied in the real world. I encouraged the students to seek out opportunities like that—internships, part-time roles, anything that gets you in the door—because nothing beats learning by doing.
The big payoff came when I graduated with a job lined up in Philadelphia with a reputable commercial lines carrier. Walking across that stage, diploma in hand, knowing I had a role waiting for me was a moment of pride and relief. I’d gone from a student with a goal to a professional with a plan, ready to take on the next chapter.
What I loved most about the event was the opportunity to participate in the Q&A panel. These students were sharp— asking about everything from licensing tips to what it’s like working in our current roles. Their energy reminded me why I wanted to do this presentation in the first place: to give back a little of what I’ve learned and maybe spark an idea or two for their own paths.
To the McNeil Institute crew—thank you for having me. You are part of an amazing program, and I can’t wait to see where your journeys take you. For now, my advice is simple: start early, get your hands dirty, and don’t be afraid to take the leap. The insurance world is waiting.
